First of all: Why do we need to eat? Basically to keep our heath and strength and energy. If we dont eat we will become weak. if we over eat we will become big and lazy. Thus thats what a pigeon needs to eat too. How much we feed and what we feed will depend largely on why we keep pigeons. Just the same as how an athletes diet may differ from a normal persons diet. Pigeons that are kept for performance will be have to be fed differently. The normal intake of a pigeon is 1 – 1 1/z oz feed per day. It is recommended to feed 2/3 in the evening and 1/3 in the morning. For the people who are flying thier pigeons the quantities and times will differ. However for all normal pigeon fanciers a pigeon will eat most grains, legumes, cereals etc. They may even take some fresh vegetables. However 4 main ingredients must be provided to all housed pigeons. 1 Feed : Popular grains are wheat, barley, dari, maize, peas, linseed, safflower, etc. Provided in a balanced diet. 2 Grit 3 Minerals & vitamins 4 Water A pigeon will enjoy some grains over others. At some times of the year they will need particular types and quantity of food for breeding, racing, molting, showing etc. What is fed to the pigeons depends a lot on why pigeons are being kept. You will see in the town centers that pigeons will
almost eat anything. Even fries. What is important is to provide a balanced diet, with minerals and grits and lots of clean water always. As a rule always feed the pigeons from a container, never on the floor or ground as the seeds may pick up germs. Its important the feed is clean and in good order. Its said we become what we eat, thus good healthy food is important. In order to understand the feeding techniques for performance then we need to have an understanding of Carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Please see my next post.
